CHAPEL HILL -- UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt spoke to the university Board of Trustees, Thursday. It was the first time she spoke to the board since taking the position last year. Chancellor Folt addressed the scandal of student-athletes not attending classes and told the Board of Trustees that the first priority was recognizing responsibility for the issues.
Folt said, "I think we all know that to move forward, we have to make sure that everyone understands that we actually do feel accountable. And that we are going to learn from that painful history. And, although I believe we are in the early stages of reform, we have made significant changes in academic policies and new procedures that are making real differences."
According to Folt, about half of the enrollees for the classes in question were student athletes, but the school does not have evidence the classes were created for the benefits of the athletics department.
