ASHEVILLE -- One  day after being brought back to the Asheville from medical treatment in Durham, state Senator Martin Nesbitt has died.

Nesbitt was transported back to the area Wednesday after spending a week at Duke University Medical Center due to an undisclosed illness. Nesbitt stepped down from his post as Senate Minority Leader earlier this week Wake County Senator Dan Blue was designed to take his position as Minority leader in the upper chamber.

The Asheville Democrat was appointed to the state House in 1979 and served 11 terms. Nesbitt was 67.
