DURHAM -- In 2013, there were more than 1,600 crimes in the Bull City, a six percent decline from 2012.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez delivered that stats on Thursday to the  Durham City Council.

"In 2013 violent crime, homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, made up just 13% of all part 1 index crimes."

There was a 43 percent spike in homicide from 2012, rape also up 40 percent; the police department credits the six percent decline to a drop in robberies and aggravated assaults.
