CHOCOWINITY -- An 11-month old Chowan County child died from injuries suffered during the tornadoes Friday night, according to the state Department of Emergency Management. A tornado that swept through Beaufort County could be the first EF-3 tornado of the year nationwide, according to the National Weather Service. Winds as high as 150 miles per hour left nearly 200 homes damaged. Governor McCrory and other state leaders toured some of the hardest hit areas on Sunday.

Gov. McCrory said, "We also need to do everything we can as a community, a state, and a nation to help them. Because these are the type of people who would help us, if it happened to us. We're going to go around many neighborhoods today and make sure they're getting the proper responses, regarding what options they have to deal with a very, very difficult situation."

More than a dozen people were injured. The American Red Cross has been offering assistance to those in need.

Donations can be made by visiting the American Red Cross website, by calling 800-733-2767 or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
