RALEIGH -- Duke Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have reached an agreement for the EPA to oversee Duke's cleanup of coal ash from the Dan River, following a spill in February. Kenneth Rhame, On-Site Coordinator with the EPA, says they will be heavily involved in the clean up process.
Rhame said, "Basically, it specifies the work to be performed by Duke. It also specified that EPA will be conducting oversight of their removal activities. And that Duke will be responsible for reimbursing EPA for any cost associated with the removal."
Rhame added that they expect cleanup at the two locations that have been identified for removal to be completed in July.
An EPA official tells us that as of two weeks ago costs were just over $785,000.
