RALEIGH -- The man accused of robbing and fatally shooting a Duke graduate student made a few requests Tuesday ahead of his scheduled murder trial later this summer. Defense attorneys for Laurence Lovette Jr. have filed new motions requesting the judge limit what potential jurors hear about other crimes in which Lovette was allegedly involved, during jury selection.
The defense attorney said, "There's also allegations of breaking and enterings, thefts, other shootings. There's a ballistics report saying that the weapon that was used to murder Mr. Mahato was also used to shoot two or three other people."
Lovette has maintained his innocence in the death of Abhijit Mahato after entering a not guilty plea last year. The 23-year-old Lovette is already serving a life sentence in the murder UNC Student Body President Eve Carson.
