WINSTON-SALEM -- Poet, educator, and activist Maya Angelou died today at age 86. Since 1982, Angelou taught African-American studies at Wake Forest University and lived in Winston-Salem. Mayor Allen Joines says she enriched the city through her involvement there.

Joines said, "Clearly, today we grieve her death, our community does, the nation does, and the world does. But, I think, most importantly, we are going to celebrate her life."

Angelou was listed among the top 10 most admired North Carolinians in an April Elon University poll.

Wake Forest University has published a remembrance site at mayaangelou.wfu.edu with additional details about Dr. Angelou’s teaching career at Wake Forest. People also may share their memories or condolences at this site.
