RALEIGH -- The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked a federal appeals court ruling from taking effect that would have restored same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting in North Carolina for this fall's election. Reverend William Barber - President of the state NAACP - says this will suppress votes.
Rev. Barber said, "The Court of Appeals determined that at least two of the measures, elimination of same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting, risk significantly reducing opportunities for black voters to exercise the franchise - in violation of the Voting Rights Act."
The decision means the full law will remain enforced while the state and civil rights groups that challenged the law prepare for trial next summer.
