(RALEIGH) -- New rules on abortion clinics was the subject of a public hearing, where some argued the new regulations strike the right balance, while others said more needs to be done.
Updates to the rules have been submitted for public comment, including Friday's meeting in Raleigh. The changes were set in motion by a law the governor signed last year.
Gretchen Stewart with Planned Parenthood says the rules need to be based in science, not politics. "Requiring abortion providers to meet the same standards as facilities providing complex surgical procedures is medically inappropriate," she said.
One objection came from North Carolina Values Coalition executive director Tami Fitzgerald. She said that the rules fall short of protecting women. The department will consider public comments before handing the rules off to the state Rules Review Commission. The Legislature is likely to review them again.
