RALEIGH -- One of two men captured in West Virginia in connection with the death of Granville County Couple had died after a suicide attempt in his cell at Raleigh’s Central Prison Tuesday afternoon.
Correctional officers conducting a routine inmate count found inmate Edward Campbell unresponsive in his Central Prison cell at 2:20 p.m., according to information from the Department of Public Safety.
Campbell had attempted to hang himself. He was treated by medical staff at Central Prison and then transported to a local hospital via EMS. At 6:30 p.m., Central Prison officials received word that Campbell had died. No other details regarding the incident have been made available by public safety officials. Campbell was a pre-trial inmate being held for Granville County and is charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths of 73-year-old Jerome Faulkner and 62-year-old Dora Faulkner.
Edward Campbell's son, Eric, is also being held at Central Prison. Eric Campbell is also charged in Granville County with first-degree murder in the case on New Year’s Day near Oxford, setting fire to their house and stealing their vehicle. The Campbells were also charged in West Virginia stemming from a shootout with Lewisburg police.
The Granville County Sheriff, Brindell B. Wilkins Jr., says he believes the incident was random.
