RALEIGH – Investigators are unable to determine the cause of a fire in Corolla that destroyed Brindley Beach Realty and damaged three nearby structures, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

The realty office building was located at 1023 Ocean Trail in Corolla. It burned down on Friday, June 12, despite the efforts of multiple responding fire departments. The structure was unoccupied when it caught fire and investigators did find live electrical wires buried beneath mulch in a flower bed on the left side of the building.

“The electrical wiring buried beneath the mulch bed could not be ruled out as a potential cause of the fire, but no evidence of arson was discovered by investigators during the fire scene examination,” stated SBI Special Agent in Charge Anthony Jernigan.

An SBI arson agent assisted the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office with conducting the fire scene investigation. Both agencies are closing this investigation.

The building is an estimated $1.5 million loss.
