RALEIGH -- Agriculture is the number one money generating industry in North Carolina. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler wants to see it grow even more. Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest says agriculture currently makes $76 billion for the state.

Troxler wants that figure to grow to $100 billion. The best way to get there is by food processing. Forest says while North Carolina farmers grow many items within the state, they ship them away to be processed elsewhere.

"[Troxler] tells a story about a can of green beans. He says the can of green beans will sell for 90 cents in the grocery store, but about nine cents of that is actually the green beans themselves. So while we're shipping the rest of that production and that money outside of North Carolina, we want to keep it here," Forest said.

Forest added that if North Carolina can process more of its own food, it will create jobs and grow the economy.
