RALEIGH, NC --
After weeks of outrage and economic fallout from a new law in North Carolina, the Governor is taking action, asking lawmakers to restore the right to sue at the state level, but he won't change the bathroom rule.
The state legislature last month passed a bill overruling LGBT antidiscrimination measures passed by local governments. It also won't allow transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. Hundreds of corporations have protested against the law, pulling jobs from the state, and entertainers have cancelled shows in the state.
Tuesday, Governor Pat McCrory signed an executive order, explaining what it includes in a YouTube video, in which he said, “The private sector can make its own policies with regard to restrooms, locker rooms, and/or shower facilities. This is not a government decision. This is your decision in the private sector.”
He also clarified his executive action to change the state’s EEO policy, saying, “As Governor, I’ve expanded our state Equal Employment Opportunity Policy, to clarify that sexual orientation and gender identity are included.”
