(ASHEVILLE) -- After five months of study, the United States Postal Service has issued a final verdict on the future of several postal facilities across North Carolina. Mail processing operations at a facility in Asheville will go to Greenville, S.C. Much of the work at two processing operations in Fayetteville will go to Charlotte and operations at a processing center in Kinston are headed to Raleigh.
Spokeswoman for the Asheville operation, Monica Robbs, said the facility there will not close totally. "(Customers) can still have their post office boxes located there. There would be no change to that and the bulk mail center where mailers go and drop off mail so that they can take advantage of discounts, that would remain as well," said Robbs.
Robbs said the move will open 183 jobs in Greenville, S.C. and the 205 employees at the Asheville facility would have first dibs on those positions. North Carolina will also be gaining some postal jobs from Virginia. Work at a Roanoke and a Lynchburg facility is set to move to Greensboro.
