(WINSTON-SALEM) -- This week's treacherous road conditions are forcing the state transportation department and some municipalities to deplete their annual budgets for handling snow and ice. Even with the sun shining crews still have a lot of work to do in some areas to cleaning up leftover ice from Monday and Tuesday's storm, especially from residential streets.
North Carolina officials announced on Tuesday that funds allotted for snow and ice removal on state highways was nearly depleted. Municipalities across the state are facing the same challenge. Robby Stone is Streets Supervisor in Winston-Salem. He said last year six winter storms cost the city around $1.5 million and although he does not think the storms this winter have approached that yet, they have been costly.
Stone said the weather has also taken taken a physical toll on workers. "Continuing to work in this day after day can become a little burdensome, but we all realize here in the street department, this is part of our duties and we're charged with keeping the road safe and open for the citizens," said Stone.
