(RALEIGH) -- State lawmakers are considering a bill that would keep habitual drunk drivers behind bars longer. The measure, which is called “Laura’s Law”, is named after a Gaston County teenager who was killed in a car accident.
Bill co-sponsor Rep. Tim Moore is leading the effort to pass the bill in the House. "So right now the worst offenders who haven't crossed the threshold to the felony level, if the judge gives them the max, they're really only going to serve eight months in prison. This bill is a major change because what it does, it takes that 24 month sentence and raises it to three years in prison and it get rid of parole," said Moore.
Michelle Armstrong was the mother of the bill namesake, Laura. As emotion poured from her voice, she said she is willing to do whatever it takes to show her support for the bill. "She's gone and I can't do anything about her being gone, but I'm going to stand up and I'm going to fight 'til God takes me home to fight these DWI, these repeat offenders that's out on the road. We've got to make the roads safer," said Armstrong as she addressed lawmakers.
The motorist charged in Laura's death had three impaired driving convictions at the time of her death.
