(RALEIGH) -- When the new legislative session begins on Wednesday, one of the duties the Republicans will find themselves in charge of is redistricting. Ran Coble of the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research said whatever plan the Republicans decide on will have to please many people in order to see the light of day.
"The final plan has got to satisfy the U.S. Supreme Court on one person, one vote and not deviating more than about 5 percent. It's got to satisfy the Justice Department on not discriminating against minority voters. It's got to satisfy the State Supreme Court on following county lines as much as possible and so that's why I say it's a really difficult job," said Coble.
Coble expects a redistricting plan to be complete in May or June, just before a final budget is crafted.
