(WINSTON-SALEM) -- The Forsyth County state lawmaker who last year sponsored and helped pass the "Safe Schools Act" wants to expand that legislation in order to get "just" penalties for those who are convicted to sex crimes and other criminal activity in public schools.
Dale Folwell, the House Speaker Pro-Tem, says that prosecutors, school administrators, parents of victims, and the public in general want those convicted to be punished more severely.
Folwell says he would like to see those convicted of molesting students have to forfeit their state pensions and benefits, as well as perhaps getting active jail time.
The "Safe Schools Act" currently demands that anyone found guilty of such crimes have to surrender their teaching certificate upon conviction.
