(RALEIGH) -- Testimony continues in the trial of a former Raleigh doctor accused of second degree murder in the death of an aspiring ballet dancer from Winston-Salem. Elena Shapiro was killed when the car she was driving was hit by another vehicle driven by Raymond Cook.
Raleigh police officer Jeffrey Geisendaffer was the first officer at the scene and told the court what he observed with cook. "When I initially spoke to him we just glanced at each other and I observed his eyes which were red and watery, bloodshot-looking," said Geisendaffer.
The officer said said it seemed obvious to him that Cook was impaired that night. Geisendaffer said he later sat briefly in his patrol car after placing Cook in the back seat and he smelled a moderate level of alcohol.
According to the prosecution, Cook has a history of drunken driving charges. Testimony in the case is expected to last for two weeks.
