(RALEIGH) -- Improving weather and a lot of hard work by fire fighters is paying off in the battle against two wildfires in North Carolina. A fire in Surry County is now 90 percent contained while a blaze scorching the hills near Chimney Rock State Park is slowing.
The fire in Surry County has burned a little more than 600 acres so far. Skull Camp Fire Chief Joshua Moose said firefighters are keeping an eye on structures in the area. "As of right now no homes are in immediate danger. We're going to work today to get a very large percentage of containment done overall though out the whole 623 acres," said Moose.
While fire crews are getting the upper hand on wildfire near Chimney Rock, officials say it is possible the fire near the Rutherford/Polk County line could grow to 1,500 acres before it is snuffed out.
Back in Surry County, Chief Moose said favorable weather conditions, with the winds subsiding and the humidity level rising will be a great help. He believes they will be able to wrap up work there soon.
