(RALEIGH) -- Republicans in the state Legislature plan to introduce another budget proposal on Wednesday after Gov. Perdue vetoed Senate Bill 13 on Tuesday. The bill would haven looked for around $540 million in saving in current fiscal year spending. This would include taking money from a corporate incentives program.
Senate President Phil Berger said the governor has to face several questions in working with the legislature to close the budget gap. "The real question here is, are we serious about balancing the budget? Are we serious about reducing the size of government? We can have the debate later about the effectiveness of these incentive programs. We don't think that Senate Bill 13 actually created any harm in what the governor could do or what could be done with those programs in the current fiscal year," said Berger.
In response to the governor's veto of Senate Bill 13, Berger said Republicans will introduce another bill that places greater control of savings in the governor's hands. "We basically give her the authority to find that savings. We don't direct that she's got to take it from here or there or any particular place, but we do give her a specific dollar target," added Berger.
