(RALEIGH) -- Several Republican lawmakers are backing a bill that would make the governor and lieutenant governor run on the same ticket. The proposed constitutional amendment would also seek to limit leadership terms for the state House Speaker and Senate President Pro Tempore to three consecutive two-year terms.
Primary sponsor Sen. Tom Apodaca said it just makes sense to have a team gubernatorial ticket. "Because they need to work together. The succession plan is already in place if something were to happen to the governor, so we thought it would be a good idea. I think a lot of states have this already," said Apodaca. Apodaca added that a gubernatorial team ticket could potentially reduce to cost of running for both offices.
