(RALEIGH) -- Republicans at the General Assembly are set to attempt an override of Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto of a bill that would block a key provision of the federal health care reform law. Perdue had originally said she would not veto or sign the bill. This would have allowed it to automatically become law last Sunday.
Senate President Pro-Tem Phil Berger said the reason the Governor changed her mind on the bill is obvious. "We don't know for sure what happened but it's kind of curious that early on she was saying that she was not going to veto it and then she spends a little bit of time in Washington with President Obama and with some other Democrats in Washington. She comes back and really the first thing she does when she gets back, of a public nature, is veto this bill," said Berger.
Perdue cited several reasons for opposing the legislation as she put her veto stamp on it Saturday afternoon. State Attorney General Roy Cooper has called the measure unenforceable.
A veto override vote is scheduled for Wednesday.
