(RALEIGH) -- Supporters of a bill that would take the cars of those who do not stop for police say it is a needed tool for police. Under the measure a person who flees in a car to avoid the police would have to give up their car.
Representative John Faircloth of Guilford County is a primary sponsor of the bill. He said that if this bill became law, he would want it to be one of the first things that teenagers who are just starting to drive to learn about. "We hope the driver's license instructors will include this as a part of their teachings to the young people. We hope parents that when they buy them that first car will point out how important it is to realize that that car is a fleeting thing if it is abused," said Faircloth.
At a press conference Tuesday, Faircloth said he believes that the thought of no longer having a car would be a deterrent to running from the law for teens. The bill is endorsed by many groups, including the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the North Carolina Sheriffs Association.
