(ASHEVILLE) -- The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a problem at the Asheville Police Department evidence room. Evidence for an upcoming drug trial is missing, and the S-B-I is trying to figure out if this is an isolated case or the symptom of a larger problem.

Asheville Police Chief Bill Hogan said the department is held to a very high standard, as it should be, and there is no excuse for evidence to be missing. "If evidence has been tampered with and removed, it's just not acceptable and that's the part that saddens me," said Hogan.

The SBI is looking at evidence in all major Asheville PD cases involving drugs, money and weapons. The Asheville Police Department's property room has been sealed during the investigation. Hogan said this incident will be used to re-evaluate policies and procedures.
