(RALEIGH) -- Land owners impacted by the tornadoes last weekend will get temporary relief from some rules on disposing of debris. The General Assembly approved a measure that will allow land owners to bury debris without a permit until June 1.
Rep. Mitch Gillespie of Marion said farmers in some areas have been impacted by storm damage and need this waiver. "There are lives which have been turned up-side-down and they're going to move ahead because their livelihood depends on getting these farms cleaned up so they can plant otherwise they're going to suffer great economic disaster," said Gillespie.
The measure also relaxes some of the restrictions on burning debris. Property owners must still consult with local officials and may still be required to obtain a permit to burn under the state’s laws that seek to prevent forest fires.
