(RALEIGH) -- The state Senate's discussions on the budget get underway in earnest this week. Republican Sen. Tom Apodaca of Hendersonville said the Senate could pass its version within two weeks.
The state is facing a budget shortfall next year, but Buncombe County Democratic Senator Martin Nesbitt said part of the problem could be solved if a temporary sales tax increase that expires June 30th is extended. "The choice is a penny sales tax to save the schools or just taking the wrecking ball the education system," said Nesbitt.
Sen. Apodaca said it is the Democrats' fault the penny sales tax might still be needed. "The previous administration knew this was coming and they just spent the money and did not allow for what was coming and it was fiscal irresponsibility," said Apodaca.
The House passed its budget with a veto proof margin last week.
