(RALEIGH) -- A proposed constitutional amendment would shake up the governance structure within public education in North Carolina. The measure would make the Superintendent of Public Instruction the head of the Department of Public Instruction. The amendment would also make the State Board of Education an advisory body, leaving all policy-making decisions up to the superintendent.
“The governor runs DPI,” said bill sponsor Rep. Bryan Holloway, R-Stokes. “She has all the appointments at the State Board of Education and that chairman of that board is essentially the one who runs the show over there. And I think that this bill is an effort to correct that.”
The House Education Committee will take up proposal on Tuesday.
