(WASHINGTON, DC) -- A measure written by North Carolina Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx, aimed at taking money away from directly or indirectly funding abortions, has passed the U.S. House. This is the latest in a series of anti-abortion measures pushed by the Republican majority.
Rep. Foxx said she wanted to make it clear that taxpayer money is not being used to train health care providers to perform abortion procedures. "My amendment did two things. It stopped some additional funding for abortions as well as the training to do abortions and it also says we won't give money to any health facility that discriminates against people who won't do abortions because of conscience," said Foxx.
The proposal was presented as an amendment to the latest of several GOP bills to restrict funding for the health care act that was enacted last year. The amendment and the overall bill both are likely to die in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
