(RALEIGH) -- The General Assembly has approved compromise legislation that will lift the cap on charter schools. The Senate approved the measure 45-0 without debate. The House voted 108-5 to send the measure to Gov. Beverly Perdue.

House Minority Leader Joe Hackney, D-Orange, said Gov. Bev Perdue will not oppose the legislation. He added that he expects the bill will be enacted into law.

In addition to eliminating the cap of 100 charter schools, the legislation also allows existing charter schools to increase annual enrollment by 20 percent. The final bill eliminated some of the more controversial provisions, including one that would have granted broader authority to an independent charter board to approve new schools.
