(RALEIGH) -- Are politicians sponsored by corporations just like stock car drivers? We're working in that direction, according to Damon Circosta of the North Carolina Center for Voter Education. "Much like NASCAR drivers," says Circosta, "our politicians have logos of various logos they represent. And we as invidivuals just sort of shut out. And we're concerned about that."
A 2010 Supreme Court decision has opened the door to increased union and corporate funding of elections. That's a bad idea according to Damon Circosta of the North Carolina Center for Voter Education. Circosta says he has nothing against companies like Exxon, he just wants their political influence limited.
"I want Exxon to do a great job creating energy. What I don't want is Exxon substituting their own personal judgement on who I think should win or lose a political campaign."
In Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, The Supreme Court ruling was a landmark decision, holding that corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited because of the First Amendment.
