(RALEIGH) -- A bill headed to North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue's desk for her signature is, instead, likely to be stamped "veto." Perdue's Communications Director Chrissy Pearson says its “very likely the governor will veto” the voter ID bill, which requires a person to show one of eight forms of photo identification.
Pearson said the bill is an effort to deliberately disenfranchise voters. “North Carolina should have left that kind of action behind a long time ago,” she added.
Pearson said Thursday the voter ID measure - given final approval by the General Assembly earlier in the day - isn't in a form the governor can support. If the governor decides to veto the legislation, it would appear to stick; the House and Senate approved the ID bill along party lines, which means the House would be a handful of votes short of the margin needed to override a Perdue veto.
