(RALEIGH) -- The proposed congressional district map released by state lawmakers last week would dramatically change the district of 13th District Rep. Brad Miller. Miller said the plan unfairly packs some districts with large Democratic majorities, which will benefit Republicans elsewhere.
"This plan would create three districts that are just absurdly Democratic. The 1st would be where President Obama would have gotten 68 percent. The 4th 71 and the 12th 78 percent," said Miller.
Miller was in the state Senate in 2001 and led the Senate Redistricting Committee that helped come up with current congressional boundaries. He ran for Congress the next year and won. He believes the Republicans changed his district simply because it has the power to do so. "They obviously would like for me not to be in Congress but it's not because of grudges from a decade ago although some of those folks really do look for something to carry a grudge about," added Miller.
The proposed boundaries would make it hard for Miller to win another term as it could contain less than one-third of his current constituents.
