(RALEIGH) -- A veto override of a voter ID bill failed but a parliamentary maneuver by Republicans will keep the issue alive for possible consideration at a later date. Republicans are pushing the bill they say is needed to control voter fraud.
"How can you possibly vote against a requirement where in one instance you have to show a photo ID to panhandle but not show a photo ID for the most important, sacred thing that we do in this country as citizens," said House Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell, of Forsyth County.
Democrats argued the bill was purely partisan because voter fraud is not a problem in North Carolina. They say such a requirement would lead to voter suppression, particularly among the elderly, minorities and women.
