(RALEIGH) -- Saturday is Bank Transfer Day; a protest against debit card fees that urges bank customers to close their accounts in favor of credit unions. Grassroots movement founder Kristen Christian says she selected November 5th -- a day associated with Guy Fawkes, who tried to bring down the British government in 1605.

"In the hopes of giving a new life to the imagery and the date so it would no longer be remembered as a dated image of violent opposition, but now be remembered as the date that the American people sit in solidarity to support their local community," Christian said.

Earlier this week, Charlotte-based Bank of America canceled plans to impose a monthly fee to debit card users. But it may be too late, as more than 70,000 people on Facebook have promised to move their funds by the end of the day Saturday.
