(ASHEVILLE) -- Students soon return to school across North Carolina and parents kindergartners are being urged to make sure their children's vaccinations are up to day. State law requires kindergartners to be current on their shots within a month of starting school.
Sue Ellen Morrison with the Buncombe County Department of Health said even though kindergartners need up to date Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis or T-DAP vaccine, Polio vaccine, Measles, Mumps and Rubella or MMR vaccine and Varicella vaccine, they do not have to get four different shots.
"The good thing about MMR/Varicella is that now it is a combination vaccine so they can just get one shot and the T-DAP and the Polio has become a combination vaccine too," said Morrison.
Morrison added that if these vaccines are not received with 30 days by a kindergartner or child starting school for the first time, letters will be sent home to parents saying their child will not be allowed back to school until they receive the required vaccines.
