(RALEIGH) -- Weather watchers are hoping a trend of periodic rains will continue, as some regions have improved their drought status in the latest drought report released on Thursday. State Climatologist Ryan Boyles said there is still a ways to go before much of the state is out of some form of drought.

"Most of the state saw at least a little bit of rain.  The far western mountains have been a little dry, but the northern coastal plain as well as the southern coastal plain saw fairly widespread rain.  Some areas were very intense and other areas didn't see as much," said Boyles.

Four counties in the coastal plain, Carteret, Craven, Jones and Onslow, are in the second to the worst drought category. An area around Charlotte and parts of Western North Carolina are the only locations not in any form of drought or abnormally dry status.
