(RALEIGH) -- Hurricane Katia has weakened to a Category 1 storm in the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to pass between North Carolina and Bermuda on Thursday. National Weather Service meteorologist Shawna Cokley said Tar Heel coast may feel some effect from the storm.

"Katia looks like it's going to be taking that north and then northeast jog, staying well off the coast.  The coast could see some wave action from that also there's the possibility of rip currents, but we should not receive any other effects from that," said Cokley.

Katia's maximum sustained winds decreased early Wednesday to 90 mph.
