(CHAPEL HILL) -- Electronic records company Allscripts is partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to start an initiative that will allow patient records to be shared by doctors across the state.  BCBSNC CEO Brad Wilson said with this program quality care can be assured wherever a patient seeks care.

"Each patient's well being in in the hands of many different doctors who don't always talk to each other.  The information technology that enables coordination can be just as important to a person's health as any therapeutic breakthrough," said Wilson.

Seven hundred fifty doctors across the state will participate.  In addition, 150 doctors and 39 free clinics will be able to take part in the program.

Allscripts CEO Glen Tullman said the initiative will allow doctors to be more proactive. "What we see here is well though out action,  not from Washington, but from inside the industry, from inside our state, using all of our resources to do something that's going to truly impact care for patients," said Tullman.
