(ASHEVILLE) -- The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is taking a big step to cut its carbon footprint. SunEnergy-One of Mooresville is installing a six-acre solar farm in one of the estate's pastures. Biltmore's President of Agriculture and Land Use Chuck Pickering says that project will result in a 25 percent cut in the estate's power bill.
He says all of the energy generated will be funneled to Antler Hill Village. He says it should not be an eyesore to visitors to the estate, but you will be able to see it from afar at the 1-40/I-240 interchange.
Pickering says being environmentally friendly was a tradition started by George Vanderbilt and Frederick Olmsted with their interests in sustainable forestry practices and soil and water conservation, and this continues the tradition.
