(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan as part of his role on the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said U.S. troops are making progress there.

"Evidenced in the last six weeks by the fact that we are beginning to dismantle the Haqqani network which is one of the larger Taliban tribal elements that contribute greatly to the death of U.S. Soldiers, Sailors and Marines," said Burr.

During his trip to Afghanistan Sen. Burr met with senior Afghan and U.S. officials.
