(RALEIGH) -- Now, all UNC officials can do is wait. Chancellor Holden Thorp and Athletic Director Dick Baddour led a six-person UNC coalition in a day long before the NCAA infractions Friday.
The NCAA has charged UNC's athletic program with nine major violations. The charges center around the football program in which players were given inappropriate benefits valued at thousands of dollars in some cases, as well as some players getting inappropriate academic assistance.
UNC officials have admitted to most of the allegations, but contested a charge of failing to monitor social media, saying that NCAA legislation didn't require it. UNC has self-imposed sanctions including two years of probation, vacating wins from 2008 and 2009, and reducing scholarships by three each in the next three seasons.
Thorp fired former head coach Butch Davis over the continuing problems in the football program. The university paid Davis approximately $2 million to buy out his contract.
Additionally, former assistant coach John Blake resigned after he was accused of steering players to the late sports agent Gary Wichard. Blake denies the charge and appeared before the committee to defend himself.
The NCAA has records of payments from Wichard to Blake totaling $31,500 and a brochure listing Blake as vice president of football operations for Wichard's agency. Blake maintains the payments were personal loans to help him pay tuition for his children.
The Committee on Infractions can recommend additional sanctions to UNC's self-imposed penalties. It expects to render a decision no later than the end of January.
