(RALEIGH) -- The North Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting on Monday with the Racial Justice Act on the agenda. Prosecutors across the state want the law repealed saying it focuses too much on race and not on the circumstances of a case.
Supporters of the law say there is a need for fairness and this law provides that. "The goal of this law was simply to finally answer the questions of race in these criminal cases and provide confidence to everyone in the state that our system truly can become color neutral," said Rep. Rick Glazier, Democrat from Cumberland County.
The law allows those on North Carolina's death row to have their death sentences changed to life in prison if they can show race played a part in sentencing decision. Glazier said repealing the law would mean allowing mistakes of the past to cloud convictions in court.
Only one vote is needed on the Senate floor to send legislation to Gov. Perdue that would repeal the law.
