(CARTHAGE) -- The law enforcement community in North Carolina is mourning the loss of a Moore County deputy with more than 37 years in law enforcement. Deputy Rick Rhyne was shot and killed Thursday as tried to arrest Martin Poynter who had an outstanding warrant for not paying child support.
"Deputy Rhyne attempted to arrest Mr. Poynter. Poynter pulled out a pistol and shot deputy Rhyne. Poynter then shot himself and died at the scene," said Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter.
Rhyne is the first Moore County deputy killed in the line of duty. Chief Deputy Neil Godfrey announced on Friday that a memorial fund has been set up in Deputy Rhyne's name. Godfrey said anyone wishing to make a donation to the “Deputy Rick Rhyne Memorial Account” can send the donation to First Bank at P.O. Box 125, Carthage, North Carolina 28327.
