(HILLSBOROUGH) -- Laurence Lovette started his first full day of a life sentence on Wednesday.  He was convicted of first degree murder on Tuesday in the death of UNC-Chapel Hill Student Body President Eve Carson in 2008.

Lovette's defense attorney said after court adjourned on Tuesday that she was disappointed with the jury's verdict.  Karen Bethea Shields also commented when she was asked if her client showed any remorse through his trial.

"He pled not guilty and so therefore wouldn't have remorse if he pled not guilty," said Shields. "As far as being human and compassionate he's very compassionate."

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said this was an emotionally draining case, even for him. "This was so senseless.  I mean, I've prosecuted for 22 years here in this county, in other places.  I've heard and read about crimes that were brutal and meaningless and there's never been one more brutal or meaningless than this crime," said Woodall.

Woodall added that he believes not only that Lovette was a willing participant in Eve Carson's murder, but perhaps the mastermind as well.
