(RALEIGH) -- This holiday season has hardly felt like one, with highs reaching the 70s during some days in December. Ironically, Ryan Ellis of the National Weather Service says it will truly start to feel like winter just as the holiday season ends.

"Sunday night will be still in the 40s, but then going into Monday night into Tuesday morning, look for temperatures to plummet down into the mid to upper 20s," Ellis said.

New Year's Eve weekend will be warm, with highs reaching into the 60s in central North Carolina on Saturday and Sunday.
