(CHARLOTTE) -- Temperatures may feel relatively mild across North Carolina, but Jack Frost could still choose to blow his brisk air and snow across the state, especially if you believe the ground hog's forecast. Pam Moen with Triple-A Carolinas said the mild weather is no reason to neglect the safe driving checklist.

Her top tips are making sure batteries and tires are in good shape. "Those are probably the two things that get people in the most trouble during the winter weather.  Also, make sure that you have all of your lights checked out and that you've got a good set of windshield wipers," said Moen.

She added that water, non-perishable food, and a cell phone and charger are other essentials for longer road trips. Moen pointed out that statewide road conditions are always available by calling 5-1-1.
