(CHAPEL HILL) -- In the wake of an NCAA scandal surrounding the Tar Heels football program and academic integrity, UNC faculty members made it clear they want academics to come first. On Friday, 100 faculty members drafted and signed a statement of principles for athletics, calling for educational responsibility and mission consistency.

UNC basketball coach Roy Williams says he hasn't seen the statement, but agrees with the principles. He says UNC has been a flagship for doing things the right way for a long time. "We here at the University of North Carolina want that to happen continually, whether you're a faculty member teaching an academic subject or you're the head basketball coach."

UNC punished itself after the NCAA found academic and athletic violations on the football team.
