(RALEIGH) -- The state of North Carolina did get a basketball championship this past weekend, in spite of losses by NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill the NCAA men's tournament.  The Shaw University Lady Bears won their first ever Division II championship in San Antonio.

The Bears defeated Ashland University of Ohio 88-82 in overtime.  Coach Jacques Curtis said coming into the season, it was a realistic goal.

"When we recruited this group we talked about winning a national championship and last year we were one game away from playing for the national championship, so this group felt like we fell short of having an opportunity to play for one, so when we said that was our goal going into this year, it was a true goal," said Curtis.

It was a first national title for Shaw University. The Lady Bears went 29-6 on the year.
