(RALEIGH) -- Leaders in the State House of Representatives continue looking into fraud in North Carolina's unemployment benefits system. Speaker of the House Thom Tillis created a panel to investigate what is believed to be a significant problem.
"We found people literally stealing from businesses who are paying for unemployment insurance. We had one of our member's contracted by a constituent, a business, where this woman had gone back to work, was drawing literally a paycheck and still taking her checks from the Employment Security Commission," said Tillis.
Tillis added that restructuring the Division of Employment Security will hopefully help prevent many of these cases of unemployment benefits fraud. The panel will offer recommendations to the full General Assembly before it reconvenes in May.
